Formed
in 1970 following a merger between FC Paris and
Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Paris Saint-Germain FC
have proved successful in their short history,
having won two league titles, five French Cups,
two League cups as well as the 1996 UEFA Cup Winners'
Cup.
PSG started life in the second division, inheriting
their position from newly-promoted Saint-Germain-en-Laye,
and secured immediate elevation to the top flight.
However, just two years into their new identity
the club split in two after a financial crisis.
The professional section was renamed Paris FC
and relegated, while the amateur side, then in
the third division, took over the PSG name.
Despite this setback, PSG promptly gained second
division and professional status, then reaching
the French Cup quarter-finals. Finally, in 1975,
after beating US Valenciennes in a play-off, they
found themselves back in the first division.
PSG have been ever-present in the top flight ever
since and the 1980s saw them win successive French
Cups - in 1982 against Michel Platini's AS Saint-Etienne
and in 1983 against FC Nantes Atlantique - and
their first league title in 1986.
If that was good the 1990s were even better. With
a clutch of top players such as David Ginola,
Youri Djorkaeff, and George Weah, PSG added a
further six trophies to their roll of honour.
In 1992/93 they won their third French Cup, finished
second in the league and started an impressive
run in Europe by reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals.
The following year they claimed a second league
title, and reached the Cup Winners' Cup last four.
Luis Fernandez took over as coach in 1994/95 and
guided PSG to a third European semi-final in three
years, this time in the UEFA Champions League.
However, PSG finished the season by winning both
the French Cup and the League Cup, an achievement
they repeated in 1998.
Their first European honour finally came when
a goal by Bruno N'Gotty was enough to beat SK
Rapid Wien in the Cup Winners' Cup final. They
then came close to retaining the title before
losing 1-0 against FC Barcelona in the 1997 final.
The new millennium saw PSG struggle to match those
heights, although they did make it to the second
group stage of the 2000/01 Champions League.
The club has qualified for this seasons UEFA Cup
and is again hoping to challenge for the French
League title and a Champions League place.
