Olympique
de Marseille, established in 1899, only just avoided
relegation at the close of the 2000-01 season.
They were due to be relegated for financial irregularities,
but were re-instated after their owner, Louis-Dreyfus,
cleared the club's £25m debt.
Financial irregularities also cost Marseille their
league championship in 1993, after they were disqualified
for match fixing. The controversy not only saw
them relegated to division two but they also lost
their chance to defend their European Champions'
Club Cup title.
With the likes of Alen Boksic, Chris Waddle, crowd
favourite Jean-Pierre Papin and other world class
players, their glory years were undoubtedly between
1989 and 1992. Basile Boli's goal secured Europe's
top prize as Marseille beat Milan AC in Munich
in 1993.
One of the only French teams capable of filling
their 60,000 seat stadium, which hosted both the
1938 and 1998 FIFA World Cup finals, Marseille
have not added to their silverware collection
since 1993. But the future looks brighter for
the club and their fanatical fan base are ever-optimistic.
