Fewer football clubs have
more history and tradition than Manchester United.
They originally formed in 1898 as Newton Heath,
but changed to their current name in 1902.
The clubs first real successful period came in
the 1950's, where Sir Matt Busby led his team
to three league titles. In the 57/58 season, United
were also strongly tipped to win the European
Cup after reaching the semi-finals, but the tragedy
of the Munich Air Disaster prevented this and
also produced the saddest day in the clubs long
history.
After surviving the plane crash, Matt Busby fought
back to fitness and a decade later he led United
to an emotional European Cup victory over Benfica
at Wembley.
Following Busby's departure, the clubs achievments
drifted into obscurity, and they were even relegated
for a season in the early seventies. The only
success United managed since the Busby era was
three FA Cups until Alex Ferguson was appointed
in 1986.
The Scot's first three years were unfruitful and
his job was on the line until another FA Cup success
arrived in 1990, followed by a memorable European
Cup Winners Cup victory over Barcelona a year
later. Ferguson then ended the clubs 28 year wait
for a league title by guiding his team to champions
of the first ever Premiership, a new and more
appealing form of the old First Division.
Following another 4 League Titles and two FA Cups,
Ferguson, then ended the 31 year wait to bring
the European Cup back to Old Trafford by lifting
the trophy in the final leg of the famous Treble
season of 1999, where they captured the League
and FA Cup as well.
Although huge as a club, Manchester United have
also been associated with some of the most legendary
footballers to ever have played the game. Duncan
Edwards, Bobby Charlton, George Best, Nobby Stiles,
Bryan Robson, Peter Schmeichel & Eric Cantona
are just a few of the major football stars to
have worn the red of United. And with the likes
of David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Ruud Van Nistelrooy,
they have a team of players who will no doubt
themsleves be classed as Manchester United legends
for many years to come.
QUICK
FACT
Their
home, Old Trafford, is the largest club
stadium in England, holding over 67,000
spectators every week. |
