After early successes before and immediately after the First World War the club enjoyed mixed fortunes and would drop into the Second Division despite producing players of quality such as Scottish striker Billy Liddell.
The arrival of Bill Shankly at the tail end of the 1950s would transform the club, not only would he bring the League title back to Anfield after nearly two decades, he would lead a fantastic footballing side on a great European adventure.
Under Shankly's successors Paisley, Fagan and Dalglish Liverpool enjoyed unparalleled success in domestic and European competition. Following Shankly's simple but effective footballing philosophy they ensured that the 1970s and 1980s belonged to Liverpool.
With Kenny Dalglish leaving as the club as it came to terms with the tragic events at Hillsborough the team entered a transitional phase. League and European success has eluded the club but under Gerard Houllier the Liverpool renaissance is taking shape. The Frenchman has already guided the club to six trophies in his time in charge of the Merseysiders, the most recent a League Cup Final win over Manchester United this season.

QUICK FACT
Star striker Michael Owen became the youngest scorer at the World Cup finals with his equalising goal against Romania at France 98.
