Although twice German champions in the 1930s, Hertha BSC Berlin have largely been consistent only in their inconsistency throughout their history.
They were founded in 1892 and joined the 1.Bundesliga when it was formed in 1963. However, since then they have tended to yo-yo up and down with the 1970s proving their best period when they had a series of high league positions and forays in Europe, most notably in 1979 when they reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup only to lose on away goals against FK Crvena Zvezda.
Their most recent promotion back into the upper echelons of German football in 1997 signalled another period of success. Although the only piece of silverware they have actually got their hands on since 1931 was the German Super Cup thanks to a victory against Schalke 04 in 2001, Hertha have begun to make a further impression on the wider European stage.
In 1999 the Berlin club qualified for the UEFA Champions League, eliminating both Milan AC and Galatasaray SK in the first group stage, before losing to FC Barcelona and FC Porto in the second stage. Then, in the following two seasons, Hertha twice qualified for the UEFA Cup third round before losing to, respectively, Internazionale FC and Servette FC. A fourth-placed finish in 2001/02 saw them qualify again for the UEFA Cup in 2002/03.
The most memorable players in Hertha's history include Hanne Sobeck (1925-39), Otto Leuschner (1925-30) and Willy Kirsei (1924-36) from their early days; Volkmar Gross (1968-72), Bernd Patzke (1969-71), Erwin Hermanndung (1971-77) and Michael Sziedat (1971-80) from their successful period in the 1970s; and the stars of today who include Michael Preetz, Marko Rehmer and Sebastian Deisler.
Hertha's most famous coach was undoubtedly Helmut 'Fiffi' Kronsbein (1968-74 and 1979-80), although they have also featured other notable coaches such as Kuno Klötzer (1977-79), Pal Csernai (1990-91), Jürgen Röber and Huub Stevens.

QUICK FACT
