Officialy formed in 1873, it took Scotland's record League winners 16 seasons to claim their first championship crown, but then they couldn't stop, winning four on the spin.
The club dominated the League after the First World War, winning the title 15 times in 21 seasons. In 1928 they won the double for the first ever time. They then won their first ever domestic treble in 1949.
Rangers also reached the European Cup Final but were comfortably beaten by Fiorentina, but continued to dominate the League until the mid 60's, then Celtic began to become the dominators of the domestic game. A good spell of success including two more trebles followed in the 70's but again Celtic emerged as top dogs in the 80's. With Rangers having another 9 year wait for supremecy.
The arrival of former Scottish International Graeme Souness sparked another Rangers revival, as he, and his successor Walter Smith achieved 9 league titles in a row., Celtic managed to break the strangle hold for as season in 1998 but Rangers won the next two League titles, the last of which came in 2000 and the club wil be vying to break the hold that Celtic now once again have under Martin O'Neill.

QUICK FACT
The 'Rangers' name came from an English Rugby Club.
