Ajax are the most successful team in Dutch history and have won everything on both domestic and European fronts. The Amsterdam side have also twice won the World Club Cup, most recently in 1995.
However, their story is not one of undiluted success. Founded in 1900 by a group of Amsterdam businessmen who met regularly on a Sunday and decided to form a football team, Dutch football in the first half of the 20th century was of a very mediocre standard and although Ajax claimed five national titles in the 1930s, few outside of the Netherlands took much notice.
That all changed in the 1960s with the arrival of Rinus Michels as coach and player supreme Johann Cryuff. Michels was appointed in November 1964 after Ajax had been crushed 9-4 by Feyenoord but with his revolutionary concept of "total football" - a system of 4-4-2 with the majestic Cryuff providing the link between midfield and attack - Ajax were soon transformed from a reasonably successful Dutch side into one of the legends of European and world football.
In the early 1970s Ajax dominated the European stage, winning three Champion Clubs' Cups in a row in 1971, 1972 and 1973, beating Panithinaikos, Internazionale FC and Juventus FC. A Cup Winners' Cup final success against Lokomotiv Leipzig followed in 1987 and a UEFA Cup victory on away goals in the final against Torino Calcio five years later in 1992. Ajax have also recorded the biggest win in the history of the UEFA Cup by defeating Luxembourg's FA Red Boys Differdange 14-0 in the 1984/5 season.
Their most recent triumph on the European stage came in the 1995 UEFA Champions League, when - coached by Louis van Gaal, they lifted the coveted trophy by beating Milan AC 1-0 in the final in Vienna. They also reached the final the following year but this time lost out to Juventus FC on penalties. In the wake of the Bosman ruling, Ajax have seen a host of their leading players, such as Michael Reiziger, Clarence Seedorf, Edgar Davids, Frank and Ronald De Boer and Marc Overmars, all leave the Dutch capital for more fame and fortune elsewhere.
Nevertheless, with coach Ronald Koeman, who joined the club mid-season, they sealed a League and Cup double in 2001/02, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League in 2002/03.
Since their foundation, Ajax have changed grounds a total of six times, settling in Amsterdam Arena in 1996, one of Europe's finest and most futuristic stadiums. However, despite this they were beaten in the race to host the Euro 2000 final by their arch-rivals from Rotterdam - Feyenoord.
2001/02: Won Dutch League and Cup double. Qualified for 2002/03 UEFA Champions League
