Aberdeen
Football Club has, since its foundation in 1903,
developed a reputation, both nationally and internationally,
as one of the UK's best known clubs. The Club
has and will continue to nurture talent and embrace
opportunity and change in an innovative manner.
On the field the Club has a long history of success,
both within Scotland and Europe, with the 1980's
particularly being an era of unparalleled achievements.
Off the field AFC has consistently recognised
the need to be at the forefront, as demonstrated
by the fact that Pittodrie was the first all-seated
stadium in Britain.
The Clubs most successful era came under Alex
Ferguson in the 1980's where the club broke the
Rangers/Celtic stranglehold to win the league
three times in 1981, 1985 and 1986.
During this time, the Dons also won the European
Cup Winners Cup, beating the mighty Real Madrid
2-1 in Gothenburg in 1983. This was followed by
a European Super Cup success with a 2-0 aggregate
win over Hamburg.
The 90's were relativley unsuccessful for the
club, and after a cup double in 1990, have won
just one League Cup in the remainder of the decade.
Now in the millennium, the clubs fortunes have
still not improved but now under new management,
the club will look towards a brighter future.
